Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less

It’s rare when a business book finds the right balance of practical advice, referenced background research and relevant stories but that’s exactly what Greg McKeown has assembled in his latest book, Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less.

Greg received his MBA from Stanford after coming to realize that completing law school in England wasn’t the best use of his most productive energy. He has gone on to co-create the course, Designing Life, Essentially at Stanford University, collaborated on the Wall Street Journal bestseller “Multipliers” and serves as a Young Global Leader for the World Economic Forum.

Orthodontists and practice managers should not only take his advice but teach it to their employees. Chiefly, the ability for you and your team to say “no” to the noise and “yes” to the things that matter will play a huge role in your success as an organization. Like most smart entrepreneurs, McKeown has figured out that saying yes to everything creates confusion in your business, reduces your ability to focus on your core competencies and diminishes your most valuable results.

It would be sufficient, in comparison to most other business books and any investment of less than $20 for McKeown to stop there, but he doesn’t. He goes on to provide practical advice on how to identify and then eliminate the noise in your life and your business so that you can achieve meaningful things on a higher level.

Any orthodontist who wants to look back at the end of their career and feel confident that they spent their life to their fullest potential and highest use, should study McKeown’s Essentialism books and go look up the references, articles and other books he references. Peeling back the noise to focus on what really matters in your life is a powerful and essential activity for the most successful individuals in any area of life.

Worked at Burleson Orthodontics. Attended University of Missouri–Kansas City. Lives in Kansas City, Missouri.
